Suffragette is an homage to quilts and the role they played in women gaining the right to vote in America. Each quilt square is a 1 foot canvas. Quilting was very popular in 19th Century America. It was a great way for women to get together on a fairly regular basis. Men typically didn't stick around to watch the women quilt, so it was a great environment for women to speak about suffrage (the right to vote in political elections).
The pieces were originally meant to hang individually, but then I envisioned them as chain mail and the strength that implies. They are now attached to one another with rings. The canvases can be arranged in any order, the current one is happenstance. Each canvas has two black edges and two white edges. The pattern is created by aligning the edges of the canvases to matching edges.
This installation was on display at the Indianapolis International Airport in March 2017 for Women's History Month through July 2017.
Purchased by JR Wurster.
