I have been wondering what to make that was water related to submit to a Design Art Concepts art call for Miami Art Basel. Well, I just finished an awesome water themed painting that took an entire year (with a few interruptions- like Speedway, 1909) BUT it was too large... hmmm... what to do... I decided to make a miniature recreation of Nova Hydrographica with some collaging techniques. I took a photo of my painting, flipped it in Photoshop and resized it to be a cropped version at 10 inches by 10 inches. I built a little canvas and did an acrylic transfer of the flipped image with clear gesso. After it completely dried, I carefully removed the paper by getting it wet and rolling it away. The ink from the print stays on the gesso, but gets a little fuzzy from the process. Next, I spray fixed it twice, then using some microns I started drawing on the image to clarify some of the details that were lost in the process. The icing on this little cake is gold leaf. I have been playing with it lately, on Nike, and on a ceramic fortune cookie that I got from @pegalito at the Faculty show at the Indianapolis Art Center in September. I don't know if this nugget will be accepted into the D|A|C show, but I am having fun making it!
