It's not often that you find a second gallery looking to show your dueling Statue of Liberties, but I've hit the jackpot, and Blackline Gallery is going to have it in their "Funk" show this coming first Friday February 1st. I painted it as a form of therapy after the last presidential election. You can read more about the artwork here. Nike is getting crazy. I am completely off script as far as following the original image, and I'm having a blast. I've been working on creating potent color combinations and textures in random pockets of the painting. I'm going full on Gustav Klimpt with the gold. Talking about Gold made me think of Yukon Cornelius from Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer. It seems less kid friendly out of context, but I'm gonna stick with this gif. I heart gifs.
Back to painting!

My painting Dark Light was used as the cover art for a local indie rock band The Lady Presidents album art. You can listen to their music here. I dig it. Consumption is getting large. I've sewn half of it entirely! It is too heavy to hang without a rod to disperse the weight evenly so she's grounded for now. Note on the bottom right is the third section, waiting to get some extra stitches to strengthen it. I work on Nike this past week too. I have decided to abandon the gridded image that I usually try my hardest to reproduce exactly. I wanted to add more textures and vibrant colors so I am just improvising as I go. I have to say, it is a LOT more fun. We shall see how it turns out.
My goal last week was to start alternating each night between painting on Nike and sewing Consumption. Well I am really bad at that because I fell down a rabbit hole of cup sewing this week and have not made much progress on Nike.
The good news is that Consumption is more than half done! Above is a picture of the third segment about to be woven together. Oreo (bottom right) approves. I'm getting to work on Nike. Must Paint! I had the random urge to update my website. In lieu of painting, my online digs have a fresh feel. Last night I finished another quarter of my installation Consumption. I am going to start alternating every other night between painting and working on it. It's hard to tell, but all of these cups are tediously sewn together. They are now formidable. You can see the progress of Consumption here. In other news, I have been working on the detail at the base of Nike, And I have a five little nugget waste canvases that are product of the gold leafing process on Nike. I like to think of them as a little Starry Night series. My father keeps saying that I need to have a YouTube channel. So here is my studio buddy, on YouTube. |
