My bleeding heart.

I am a humanist.  I try to empathize with the people I interact with, and people that are experiencing entirely different ways of life half way around the world.  I like to base my choices on facts, evidence, and SCIENCE.

My mixed up feelings about America and how quickly we are becoming something unrecognizable has inspired my newest painting.

It uses an icon of the United States of America, the Statue of Liberty, as the subject matter.  I also like that the statue is female.  I feel like women's rights are being hung out to dry by my current President.  He has cut funding to Planned Parenthood, which is an amazing health care program geared towards women and family planning.  I used it when I was 27 and needed guidance with an unexpected pregnancy, not to terminate it, but to help me figure out what I needed to do to help my child succeed.

So, my newest painting is going to show the Statue of Liberty upside down, like my view of the world now.  It is actually a historical photo of the Statue under construction in France.  The scaffolding around her seems like a cage, visually.  The color scheme is red.   Red for the color I am seeing when women's rights are being attacked.  Red for the blood that will flow from the countless deaths that will result from lack of access to healthcare.  Red for the party that is enabling all of this to happen.   Red for the Russian influence that seems to be seeping into America.

I don't envision anyone wanting to buy this painting, or even hang it on their wall.
But dammit, I still need to paint it.
